Yesterday marks the end of our interns 12weeks journey with the team. Well, bittersweet as usual when comes to having to say goodbyes. But above all, I hope the 12 weeks has been fruitful for them like how it has been for me. As we progress further in our work, we see ourselves assuming more roles and developing our many facets as we do so.
As much as I'm a sup to the current batch of interns, I was once a supervisee to someone else. And I think that's the magical bit of it all. I was very appreciative of what my sup had taught and exposed me too, and that left me with a very positive experience which I'm very keen to pass on. Yes, again, you will never know the impact of your actions, because humans are never meant to function alone, they interact, they learn from each other and they spread what they've acquired, be it good or bad.
Interesting huh? And that's why it's heartening when you hear your intern telling you what they've learnt from you and what kinds of inspiration you have ignited in them. Because not everyday people around you tell you these things, and it takes someone new to give you a fresh perspective that's not influenced by past experience. In a way, I see this as a form of feedback of myself at a given time point and I really do value these feedback cause I know they don't come by easy. Yes, it requires courage for a person to give genuine feedback of another person face to face. So please, value those who's willing to do so!
I always see learning as a two-way street. When I'm actively imparting, I'm also receiving. Never a dictator, and never believed in dictatorship. Maybe due to my great need of freedom, it kinda translates to my interacting style. I feel that if you have no share in your sayings or work or the freedom to want to take part, you basically have no ownership of them. And that's why I never believed in spoon-feeding or "I-tell-you-you-just-follow" kind of interaction. Ha, speaking from past experience, I was never good at following such dictatorship style as well and I actually rebelled with the most childish methods. The rebellious young hwc, hahaha, but okay, I've grown up and better at handling such I suppose. The 'if you cannot change things, change your mindset' mentality is pretty ingrained now. Alright, I've digressed.
Yes, what I'm trying to say is, I feel that I'm most comfortable when interacting with people whom generally have an intrinsic interest to wanna learn and get better. And it is considered a realisation I suppose? A realisation that helps me understand a little to why I click better with certain people and not others, why my type of guidance is as such and what I genuinely wanna rub off on people whom I interact with. That being said, I guess this realisation also highlighted a need for me to expand my versatility. Never really thought much about this word but I presume to advance, this is an area I need to work on.
Being highly selective, I almost only choose to hang out with people whom my heart gives the nod. It's a not bad thing but I am starting to see need for a shift. Not a major one, but at least, there's an impetus to try. You don't need to bare your heart, but it doesn't harm to 'hold space' for others. 'Holding space', another interesting concept that deserves to be propagandized.
Well well well, so much reflections on a Saturday, but again, just a note to the self!
