Work for what that matters

Constantly reminding myself to always stay connected to my heart and I suppose being "here", in this virtual space, has always been the most useful method for me. Been through too many cycles of introspections to understand this is what that works best for my heart - wording things out.

Well, the week started off pretty awful I must say, gotten too entrenched in certain thinking that I almost couldn't see a way out. It's worse when I've always pride myself in the ability to see things from multiple angles, so when I can't, it gets real frustrating. :( But I've come to realise that at times dialectical thinking can fail me too. Am no saint I know, but I suppose communication with external parties is clearly not my forte or most preferred way of dealing with matters. And this can really make things difficult especially when I can't find the answer from within.

Because it has always been search for answers yourself internally > positive, conclude OR negative, reframe >  move on. Can't move on, keep thinking till you get an answer. But at times, you just can't and for things to work, you need to talk about it. Yes, talk about it. Something that I've learnt so much about these days. Talk.

Always have this thinking that talking is only for individuals who don't understand each other or for demanding people who's always looking for answers from others. Ha, what a warped perception I have of such "talks" obviously. Ha, but I must admit, I've never imagined myself to require such "talks" for work to go on.

Ha, but it was good as it helped me understand that for work, I really need clarity. However so, I do understand that clarity shouldn't be a given as not everyone is required to explain their actions for you to clarify your doubts. Time ought to be better spent yea?

Saw this in the book "Rules of Work" and I thought it's interesting to share. The author actually encouraged readers to list down targets according to the values/beliefs that they hold. Something which can help them set things right or get back on track should going gets tough. Personally it makes real sense to me, cause often when you're stuck with no way out (like how I was few days back), your mind gets so bogged down that you can't think straight. And you may be surprised how these simple few words could amplify and knock some sense into you! Ha, so with the belief that it may help, I created my own list some time back, and I must say, reading it again during times of confusion really feels so good. The kind of "Hey, didn't I say this before? I will not be overly bothered by people's inaction? And I should only make judgement about my own actions? Then why should I be troubled over what others do or did not do?" Ha, yes, can you just imagine the instant uplift?

That being said, I thought it will be more useful if I can have them here. After all, having them here would boost accountability since I have people reading (can't eat my own words huh?) and serves as a constant reminder.  So here it goes, my short list of work targets:

  • I will never do anything immoral just to get my work done
  • No work should ever worth more than my family and loved ones
  • I will never leave my teammates in a lurch
  • I will never badmouth my team
  • I will not be overly bothered by people's inactions
  • I will only make judgement about my own actions

Well, have indeed taken too long to get this post together, but better late than never? Ha, with this post, I hope I can be less conflicted and really work for what that matters. Been confused too often in this job and it should really stop. I took this job for a purpose, so please never forget that. And please learn and be better you, hwc.
