Inspiring read - Neither Civil nor Servant
Such an inspiring read that I actually devoured the entire book within 2 nights. Not the typical book that I will usually go for but I must admit the title indeed caught my attention. A timely read I would say, at a time when I'm questioning a lot of things that I do, the environment that we are in, the good and the bad and importantly where do I go next.
While many of the things shared and done by this exceptional leader can be debatable and leave many wondering if his actions are replicable in times like now, e.g., the rules breaking, the seeking forgiveness is easier than asking permission style, what stood out for me is really his unwavering desire to change things and how he is always bringing people along the journey. Not just for people underneath him, but also for leaders above him. The kind of unquestionable loyalty to leaders he trusts fully in and immense faith he has in his subordinates to keep pace with him. Impatient in getting things done while patient in explaining the "why" behind things.
Not sure if I will ever get to meet such leader in my lifetime, but I'm so glad that this leader exists and that he has influenced so many after him. The one whom set a different path for how a civil servant can be like. Although that kind of mafia maverick style will not be suitable now as the institution is a lot bigger and much more complicated where any unruly sudden change could easily affect the stability and trust of people, the spirit of constant learning, trying, doing and connecting deeply for the betterment of the people we serve will remain the important tenets to ensure a strong and progressive institution in any given times.
Do good in whatever that you do and never lose sight of why you've started out on this path - what do you value, and what makes you want to hustle?
